Crème Magazine shares some wellness tips for 2010.

I'm sure you've read all of the articles and seen the television segments on the "New Year and the New You."  As cliche as that sounds, it is a good time to plant the seeds for a spring renewal and maintain it throughout the rest of the year. So here are some tips to easily integrate into your healthier lifestyle.

 

 

Eating healthier: Integrate more servings of fruits and veggies into your diet by drinking smoothies, having a bowl of soup such as broccoli or tomato, eating a big salad for lunch or dinner, drinking natural infusion drinks (such as Naked) and bringing carrots and celery to work as snacks. What has also helped me in this area, is looking up vegetable recipes online.  I've started making roasted asparagus, pan-seared brussel sprouts and fried eggplant on a regular basis.

 

Exercise more: If you can join a gym, take classes instead of devising your own program.  Engaging in an activity you enjoy doing will make the exercise less dreadful and your fellow classmates will motivate you to keep up. Focusing on the lightness and clarity you feel from the endorphins you've released is a good motivator as well.If you can't join a gym, take individual classes offered in your community. Spinning, bellydance, salsa and even pole dance classes are available all over the country.

 

Volunteer work/give back:  Giving back not only helps others, but it will help you as well by providing social connections, increased self-esteem and lower stress levels.  Again, find something that you enjoy or are good at like art, marketing, kids, sports, etc.  If you can't provide some time, try giving to a charity. You'd be surprised at how little you can give to make a difference.

 

Lastly, a great way to start a new lifestyle is a detox or cleanse. Remember to consult with a physician about doing extreme detoxing as to not interfere with any medications or existing conditions. Here are some ways to help eliminate the toxins in your system.

 

Baths: Adding epsom salts, apple cider vinegar and baking soda all help to release toxins.

 

Hydrotherapy: Alternating between cold and hot water in the shower helps increase circulation.

 

Juice fast: Juicing gives the "eliminating" organs like the liver and kidneys a break and allows for better performance. Try celery/apple, or beet/carrot/apple.You can also consume soups and teas. 

 

Dry brushing: Encourages new skin cell turnover, increases circulation and helps clean the lymphatic system. A natural bristle brush is best.

 

Yoga: There are a few poses specifically for detox including the well known, Downward Facing Dog.  However, the real detox occurs with the deep breathing which helps the lungs clear out carbon dioxide and increase their oxygen intake.

 

Meditation: Thoughts can be just as toxic as a can of soda.  Meditation helps quiet the mind and increases focus. Try 10 minutes a day for even days and see if you notice more calm in your everyday life.

 

Drink lots of green tea: A well known detoxifyer by fighting off free radicals, there are many flavors that can be found in just about any grocery store.

 

Increase fiber intake: Cleanses the colon and keeps the digestive system moving. Beans and whole grains such as oats and wheat are good sources.

 

Sit in a sauna and sweat: Skin is our largest organ and sweating eliminates toxins via the pores. You may even lose a couple of pounds of water weight.

 

Drink lots of water: Helps eliminate waste from the kidneys and flush out the internal system.  If it helps, purchase some flavored water to help get your 64 ounces in.  Also, filtered water is best.
