Fefe Dobson Returns
Pop star singer Fefe Dobson says her new album is “Lots of fun, energy and rock & roll,” .
After quite a hiatus, the rock & roll star is back! “Lots of fun, energy and rock & roll,” was how Fefe Dobson described her upcoming album Joy. It wasn’t easy for the singer to get where she is now, she discusses some of the obstacles she had to overcome, like being dropped from her label as well as giving advice to some aspiring singers.
Lathleen: How would you categorize your music, rock, pop or R&B?
Fefe: I would classify it as Rock and Pop.
Lathleen: The whole world knows who Fefe Dobson, is there something about you we may not know?
Fefe: I’m a really bad cook, but I can bake, like the best baker ever. Also that my record is coming out May 4th called Joy.
Lathleen: What is an average day like for you?
Fefe: I can tell you what my day was like today. I got up early and got ready for two interviews, did some MTV and VH1 interviews all day basically, and a couple of days ago my day consisted of getting ready to sing for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Lathleen: What do you like least about your career?
Fefe: Getting up really early is difficult, but I’m actually a morning person, which is weird, it’s actually kind of scary, I scare the people I work with, because I’m like GOOD MORNING (laughs) but then I crash like half way through the day.
Lathleen: How did you overcome being dropped from your label, we know that that’s a girls biggest nightmare?
Fefe: It was a long time ago. I was 17, I’m 25 now and it’s interesting, when we parted ways. I like to say that, "parted ways." It was just a great time for me to figure myself out musically, I just kind of recreated my self with my own pace in my own space.
Lathleen: As a little girl, who inspired you?
Fefe: Michael Jackson and Guns and Roses.
Lathleen: A lot of people say that your style was borrowed from, for example Rihanna, how do you feel about people borrowing your style?
Fefe: You know what, I don’t have cable, and I don’t really know what’s going on, so when I hear it randomly I’m just like “oh really cool.” But people sometimes think of it as a negative thing and if its true, I think of it as a positive and a compliment and I think she’s doing great music and she should keep it up.
Lathleen: Some folks consider you a fashion icon, who is your favorite designer?
Fefe: Well, I’m actually still figuring that out, who my favorite designer is, sometimes I love certain things, sometimes I love other things. Right now I’m trying to create my own thing, you know. If I had to say who my favorite designer is, it would be vintage, and that’s not a designer.
Lathleen: What separates you from other singers? What makes you stand out?
Fefe: You know I always try my best not to blend. What makes me stand out, I think just being myself; I think that makes everyone stand out when they’re just being their self and not trying to be anyone, cause then we blend right.
Lathleen: Are you single?
Fefe: Yes I am! Newly single; I just became single a couple of weeks ago.
Lathleen: Have you ever met any celebrities during your career, and was star struck?
Fefe: Yeah, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I was performing in front of Bruce Springsteen and like Green Day and all those people and that was pretty, wow. I was up there sharing the stage with Ronnie Spector; I mean, that was pretty amazing.
Lathleen: Who would you like to work with anyone in the industry, if you haven’t?
Fefe: I mean from the older generation, I would love to work with Stevie Nicks, and from music now, I would like to do a song with Kanye West.
Lathleen: Who was your favorite person to work with?
Fefe: My favorite person that I’ve worked with would have to be Kevin Rudolf, he did “Let it Rock” with Lil Wayne.
Lathleen: What advice do you have for aspiring singers?
Fefe: I would say don’t give up and find your voice…be your own person and make your own music and that’s how you would stand out.
