Big Boi's new album was released earlier this month; is it here to stay?
A colorful title is only deserving of such a standout album. Big Boi more than quenches the thirst of dehydrated fans that haven’t been well nourished since 2003. Big Boi has been M.I.A, perhaps M.I.A. couldn’t fully describe the absence of his presence but after a switch from Jive records to Def Jam, he makes a return. This album will be a favorite of many and will serve as the soundtrack for this summer.
As any Outkast fan might have, there was a hint of apprehension as to whether or not Big Boi could hold his own on a solo album. Songs such as “Shutterbug”, “Be Still”, “Shineblockas” and mentionable others will rid any shadow of a doubt on Big Boi’s ability to kill every verse. During a time where hip hop is undergoing a bit of metamorphous, the Atlanta native is able to hold his own without feeling the pressure at all to conform. The Southern Charmer is back.
The album has 19 tracks. 13 tracks out of 19 tracks were most enjoyable, and that mere fact distinguishes the album because it is becoming increasingly rare to come across a piece of work that can be continuously played without skipping tracks. Each of the tracks has many intros which allude to the Story of Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. (One of many alias’ used by Big Boi) While creating an album that could give any listeners multiple eargasms, he unleashes his playful side as well.
The album includes collaborations such as Janelle Monae, Jamie Foxx, T.I., Gucci Mane and Andre 3000 somewhat like hearing your favorite song in the car after a great day, it just makes everything better and more memorable. Most notable producers include Big Boi himself as well as Andre 3000 (You aint no DJ), Boi-1da, Kudjo of Goodie Mob and Sleepy Brown. On the album Big Boi was careful not to use predictable voice enhancers such as auto tune but tickled the fancies of his listeners through his creativity.
The stands out tracks include the bass laced “General Patton” which can easily sound through any car sound system. “Tangerine” a definite club banger and motivator to make the most stubborn of wallflowers dance in the club. Well aware that many Outkast listeners were in anticipation of hearing a track featuring Andre 3000, the final track “Lookin For Ya” is like dessert. Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico hushes any doubts, and is evidence that Big Boi is here to stay. This solo project is so becoming of a rapper as talented as Big Boi, there’s depth beyond the production and it’s clear that he took his time to create art.
